At TLDG, we span the gap between knowing about leadership in theory and acting like a leader when it counts. We combine one of the nation’s most prestigious and decorated faculty with top field practitioners to facilitate the only leadership development program of its kind, building leaders in the very same time-honored tradition that has helped build one of the world’s most powerful nations.
The Mission of the Thayer Leader Development Group at West Point is to help build leaders of character by offering leadership and ethics education grounded in the United States Army leadership philosophy of “Be, Know, Do” and the United States Military Academy values of “Duty, Honor, Country,” in the inspirational venue of The Historic Thayer Hotel at West Point.
TLDG is the benchmark in leadership development, providing both world-class applied academic instruction and experiential learning in an unequalled inspirational setting. Just as the Army focuses on the “whole” leader–character, knowledge, and application–TLDG’s unique 4-Pronged approach to leadership development creates an extraordinarily complete, customized experience for participants.
Creating "Whole" Leaders
To meet the goals outlined above, TLDG takes a unique holistic approach to leadership development, founded on the Army’s leadership philosophy of “Be, Know, Do” which focuses on creating complete leaders through the development of character, knowledge, and application. LEADERS TRAINING LEADERS: APPLIED ACADEMICS — Offering a superior combination of academics and applied learning makes TLDG's program anything but “textbook” leadership training. Here, theory becomes more relevant and concrete – as classroom teachings morph into highly interactive sessions grounded in widely applicable best practices from the military, working synergistically to bring together organizational, ethical and personal components to power leadership skills.
EXPERIENTIAL EMPHASIS — These experiences take the learnings from the classroom outdoors to leverage the physical location and history of the Hudson River Valley and West Point. While outside, participants glean leadership lessons through innovative engagement. Led by experts well-versed in the foundations of Army training, each activity is embedded with valuable leadership principles, directly reinforcing the core tenents of strategy, communication, trust, among others
CONTEXTUAL LEARNING: SENIOR ADVISORS — TLDG has become the benchmark in leadership development, by providing unrivaled access to Senior Advisors who have lived, served, and practiced the same principles that they teach. These leaders are retired General Officers who serve as coaches and mentors helping develop action plans for organizations and individuals to implement in their environments.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: INSPIRATIONAL KEYNOTES — TLDG's Keynote Speakers are inspirational and motivational "Leaders of Character" who share unique experiences and compelling messages that reinforce the principles that apply in the battlefield and the boardroom.
